Imagining Science: An Artistic Exploration of Science, Society and Social Change

Imagining Science brought together a group of internationally recognized artists and social commentators in order to work together to produce a body of creative research and accompanying essays for an exhibition and publication exploring the complex legal, ethical and social issues associated with advancements made in such life science technologies as stem cell research, cloning, and genetic testing. The initiative consisted of three components: a workshop held August 23-25, 2007 at the Banff Centre (SSHRC funded); a public exhibition held at the Art Gallery of Alberta from November 14, 2008 to January 11, 2009; and a book of essays and images from participants. The project involved world-renowned artists and scholars, including Christine Borland (Glasgow School of Art), Catherine Richards (University of Ottawa), Hank Greely (Stanford University), and others. The publication was reviewed in the Canadian Medical Association Journal (June 2009) and recently received an award at the New York Book Fair.

My involvement in this undertaking included acting as a project leader, as well as co-editing the Imagining Science publication. I also produced new creative work, Through Destinations, which was a collaborative installation made with Royden Mills, involving prints, drawings and sculptures in an installation environment.
